Staying fit doesn’t have to be about hitting the gym every day. There a plenty of ways to keep things fresh, fun and interesting. Here are some of the ways Impact Physical Therapy in Champaign will have fun locally this year.
Presence Health and Christie Clinic Illinois 5k and Marathon (April 21-22, 2017)
Regardless of your fitness level, the runs on the third weekend of April this year are a sure bet to be fun. There are multiple courses available, depending on what is most comfortable for you.
On Friday, April 21st, the Presence Health Illinois 5k Run/Walk will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. outside Memorial Stadium, between First Street & Fourth Street in Champaign.
On Saturday, the real fun will begin. Organizers have set up five different courses for participants to take on. The 10k is scheduled to start at 7:35 a.m., with runners organized by speed. At 7:03 a.m., the half-marathon and marathon relay will begin. The marathon relay will consist of teams of four taking on a full 26.2-mile course. In the cases of both the half-marathon and the relay, participants must be averaging a minimum of a 16-minute mile. A wave start will be used, so plan to start in your appropriate grouping.
Lastly, the marathon also begins at 7:03 a.m. For the full marathon, called the 2017 RRCA Central Region Marathon Championship, the course will be closed to those who average faster than a 13:45-minute mile. Those who perform the best in this year’s marathon will qualify for the Boston Marathon later in the year.
The event will conclude at the 27th mile Celebrate Victory Bash, sponsored by Meijer.
Busey Illinois Youth Run (April, 22, 2017)
People responsible for athletics in Champaign, Illinois, know that kids want to participate as well. That’s why for kids between the ages of 4 and 10, a 1K run will take place within the confines of Memorial Stadium. Sensitive to the fact that many parents will be participating in the marathon the same day, the youth run starts at 3:00 p.m.
Public Lunch Ice Skating (Weekdays)
Enjoy the cold weather while it lasts! Perfect for kids and adults alike, the public lunch ice skating is available every weekday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., at the University of Illinois Ice Arena in Champaign. It’s free to the little tykes (3 and under), campus rec members and University of Illinois students. Don’t fall into those categories? Don’t worry! Admission is just $5. But act fast; the public lunch ice skating in Champaign will end March 17th.
Join an Adult Sports League
The Champaign Parks District tries to keep everyone fit, healthy and happy with beautiful fields and parks for all ages. But once you get past a certain age, the opportunities to participate in sporting events – rather than simply cheering on your favorite team – tend to dwindle. But never fear. Champaign, Illinois has more than enough sport lovers to put together some great sports leagues, including teams for softball, soccer, basketball and volleyball. Recreational sports that are available year-round include pickleball and badminton.
Adult Fencing Camp (July 15-17)
Ever wanted to be one of The Three Musketeers? Maybe the stylings of Inigo Montoya are more your dream. Either way, this summer you’ll be able to learn the basics of a great lifelong sport in a three-day camp. Master coach Michael Vitoux is the Point Fencing Club & School President and will be the lead instructor. You’ll learn footwork, blade technique, tactics and the standard principles of fencing. The camp will be in a perfect location if you train in downtown Champaign.
Explore the Allerton Park & Retreat Center
One of the most beautiful and unique places in Champaign, Illinois is also a perfect spot to explore and stay active. Allerton Park once was a private residence, until it became a historical treasure under the purview of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The park is over 1,500 acres of floodplains, forests, meadows, a 30-acre demonstration prairie and 14 miles of hiking trails. The park is a hop, skip and a jump away in Monticello.
