What is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is an instrument-assisted, soft tissue mobilization therapy that helps break up fascial restrictions and scar tissue adhesions. Athlete David Graston invented this technique after he was unable to fully recover from a water skiing knee injury. As the leading modality in Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), it is clinically proven to achieve faster and better outcomes for conditions including Achilles Tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel, Adhesive Capsulitis, IT Band Syndrome, Lumbar Strain and Plantar Fasciitis. This technique has had positive outcomes in 75 to 90 percent of all conditions treated.

 

The Graston Technique Protocol

Prior to treatment, it is sometimes helpful to warm up with some form of cardiovascular activity, like riding a stationary bike or walking on a treadmill. Once that is completed, the medical expert will use the appropriate instruments to scan and treat the affected area. As the instruments are moved over the affected area and come in contact with the adhesions, they help break up scar tissue and fascial restrictions. In time, this process will reduce or eliminate the adhered fibers, restoring range of motion and eliminating the associated pain.

 

 

GT allows a clinician to get as deep into the tissue as necessary to invoke change, yet be sensitive to patient pain and tolerance. As the instruments are moved over the affected area and come in contact with the adhesions there may be some soreness noted, but clinicians are trained to monitor the patient’s response and make appropriate changes in pressure as necessary.
